Warm Soapy Water
Step-by-Step

How to Clean Jade Jewelry

This method is safe for all jade — Type A, B, or C — and for solid gold 14K and 18K settings. If your jade is set in plated metal, avoid soaking.

1
Fill a small bowl with lukewarm water and add 2–3 drops of mild dish or hand soap.
2
Dip a soft lint-free cloth or very soft toothbrush into the solution.
3
Gently wipe the jade surface using small circular motions. Use the toothbrush for crevices in rings or carved pieces — no heavy pressure.
4
Rinse under lukewarm running water. Avoid hot water — thermal shock risk.
5
Pat dry immediately with a clean, dry soft cloth. Do not air dry — water left on gold settings can leave marks.
6
Optional: after drying, buff with a dry lint-free cloth to restore surface luster.
How often: for daily-wear pieces, every 2–4 weeks is sufficient. After exposure to lotions, perfume, or sweat, wipe with a dry cloth immediately. GIA: 'warm soapy water is always a safe choice' — suitable regardless of treatment status.
What Not to Do

What Damages Jade

Avoid: Ultrasonic Cleaners

Safe only for confirmed Type A (untreated) jade. Most jade may be Type B (polymer-impregnated). Ultrasonic vibrations degrade polymer fillers and can crack treated jade internally.

Avoid: Steam Cleaners

Heat and pressure can crack jade or damage gold alloys over time. Even if the stone appears undamaged, internal micro-fractures may develop.

Avoid: Chlorine & Pool Water

Chlorine bleach pits gold alloys and degrades some jade treatments over time. Remove before pool swimming. Hot tubs compound the risk with heat.

Avoid: Harsh Chemicals

Ammonia, acetone, bleach, strong jewelry cleaners. Even hairspray and perfume over time reduce surface luster. Apply cosmetics before putting on jade.

Avoid: Extreme Heat

A jeweler's torch or very hot water can crack jade internally through thermal shock. Always use lukewarm, never hot. Inform your jeweler before any repair work.

Avoid: Diamond Storage Contact

Diamonds (Mohs 10) will scratch jadeite (Mohs 6.5–7) in storage. Never store jade pieces piled together with other jewelry. Keep each piece separately.

Storage

How to Store Jade Jewelry

Storage is where most damage happens — not during wear.

1
Store each piece separately in a soft pouch or lined jewelry box. Never pile jade pieces together.
2
Keep away from diamonds, sapphires, and other hard gemstones that can scratch jade surfaces.
3
Avoid direct sunlight — prolonged UV exposure can affect some jade treatments and gold finishes.
4
Avoid high humidity over extended periods. Use a silica desiccant pack if the climate is humid.
5
Do not store in the bathroom — temperature fluctuations and humidity accelerate surface wear.
The Setting

Caring for the Gold Setting

Solid 14K/18K gold is very low maintenance — occasional polish with a soft cloth is all it needs. Hallmarked solid gold does not tarnish, fade, or require replating.

What it does need: avoid harsh chemicals near the setting (same guidance as the jade). Inspect periodically that the jade is still secure in the mount — especially for rings worn daily.

A professional check once a year is recommended for rings worn daily — a small habit that prevents small problems from becoming expensive ones.

Questions

Frequently Asked

What is the safest way to clean jade jewelry?+
Warm water with a few drops of mild soap and a soft cloth — this is the method recommended by GIA and safe for all jade regardless of treatment status. Rinse under lukewarm water and pat dry immediately. Do not use hot water, harsh chemicals, or ultrasonic cleaners unless you are certain your jade is Type A untreated.
Can jade jewelry go in an ultrasonic cleaner?+
Only if your jade is confirmed Type A (natural, untreated). Most jade sold contains some level of treatment — Type B polymer-impregnation is common. Ultrasonic vibrations can degrade polymer fillers and potentially crack treated jade internally. When in doubt, use warm soapy water only.
How often should you clean jade jewelry?+
For daily-wear pieces, every 2–4 weeks is sufficient. After exposure to perfume, lotion, or sweat, wipe with a dry soft cloth immediately. A jade piece that starts to look dull is usually just needing a gentle clean — the luster restores quickly.
What damages jade jewelry?+
Ultrasonic cleaners (unless confirmed Type A), steam cleaners, chlorine bleach, harsh chemical cleaners, extreme heat, and storage alongside diamonds or other hard gemstones. Prolonged direct sunlight and high humidity can also affect some treatments and gold finishes over time.
How should jade jewelry be stored?+
Store each piece separately in a soft pouch or lined compartment. Keep away from diamonds and other hard gemstones that will scratch jade. Avoid the bathroom. Avoid direct sunlight. Use a silica desiccant pack in the jewelry box in humid climates.
