How to Clean a
Jade Necklace

Jade wears beautifully with a little routine. Here's how to clean a jade bead necklace gently, protect the gold details, and store it so the colour and thread last.

The gentle rule: wipe the jade beads with a soft, slightly damp cloth after wear, and occasionally clean them with lukewarm water and a drop of mild soap, then dry gently. Avoid harsh chemicals, ultrasonic cleaners and prolonged heat, and keep water away from the string and any glued settings.

i.

The gentle
clean

Most jade only needs a soft wipe. A deeper clean, now and then, is simple:

  1. Wipe each bead with a soft, lint-free cloth after wearing to lift oils and residue.
  2. Occasionally, dip a cloth in lukewarm water with a single drop of mild soap and wipe the beads.
  3. Wipe again with a cloth dampened in clean water to remove any soap.
  4. Dry gently and let the necklace air-dry flat before storing.

That's usually all jade asks for. The goal is to lift what dulls the surface without soaking the piece.

ii.

What to
avoid

Jade is fairly hard, but the necklace as a whole - beads, thread and any gold details - is only as tough as its most delicate part.

Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners, bleach, ammonia and jewellery dips. Don't soak a bead strand, and avoid prolonged heat or direct sun, which can affect some jade and loosen glued settings. Put the necklace on after perfume, lotion and hairspray have dried.
iii.

Jade and gold,
zone by zone

A jade-and-gold piece has two materials with slightly different needs. The jade beads want the gentle wipe above. The gold details can take a soft cloth and, if needed, the same mild soapy water - just keep moisture off the thread and away from any point where a bead is glued rather than strung.

Because construction varies, check with the maker before any deeper cleaning of a specific piece, so you match the method to its thread, clasp and settings.

iv.

Everyday
wear

Jade suits regular wear, and many people wear a piece almost daily. The habits that keep it looking new are small: take it off for cleaning, gardening, workouts and swimming, and give it a quick wipe at the end of the day.

Treat it as jewellery, not armour - lovely to wear often, worth removing for anything rough.

v.

How to
store it

Give jade its own soft pouch or a lined compartment, away from harder stones and metals that could scratch the beads or the gold. Lay a bead strand flat rather than hanging it, so the thread doesn't stretch over time, and keep it somewhere that isn't extremely dry or hot.

vi.

When to see a
jeweler

Have a strand looked at if the thread between the beads seems stretched or grubby, if the clasp feels loose, or if a bead moves on the string. A periodic restring keeps a bead necklace secure and even - and it's the moment to check the clasp and gold details too.

Frequently asked

How do you clean a jade necklace?

Wipe the jade beads with a soft, slightly damp cloth after wear. Once in a while, clean them with lukewarm water and a drop of mild soap, then dry gently with a soft cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals, ultrasonic cleaners and prolonged heat, and keep water away from the string and any glued settings.

Can you wear jade every day?

Jade is fairly hard and suits regular wear, but it can still scratch or chip on a hard knock. For daily wear, take it off for cleaning, gardening, workouts and anything with chemicals, and wipe it down at the end of the day.

Can a jade necklace get wet?

A brief rinse or a damp-cloth wipe is fine, but avoid soaking a beaded necklace. Water can weaken the thread through the drill holes over time and may loosen glued components, so dry it well and don't wear it swimming or in the shower.

How do you store a jade necklace?

Store it flat in a soft pouch or lined box, away from harder jewellery that could scratch the beads or gold. Lay a bead strand flat rather than hanging it, so the thread does not stretch, and keep it somewhere that is not extremely dry or hot.
